Why We Can’t Wait for January: Moving Your Body Even When the Days Get Short and Cold

Every year around this time, the same pattern shows up: The days get shorter. The sun clocks out early. The temperatures dip. And suddenly, even the most motivated person starts bargaining with themselves about movement.

If you feel that heaviness in your body or that resistance in your mind, trust me—you are not alone. And to be fully transparent? This season gets me every single year too. I HATE the cold. Hate it. I’m a sunshine, warm breeze, long-daylight kind of girl. But this year? Whew. It has felt even harder than usual. The darkness hits earlier. The chill feels deeper. And the desire to curl up and do nothing? Very real.

But here’s the truth I want you (and myself) to sit with:
Movement is more important now than ever.
When winter pushes us to slow down, that’s usually the very moment our bodies need us to stay consistent. Not perfect. Not high-intensity. Just consistent.

Why We Can’t Hit Pause Until the New Year
Because momentum matters.
Every December, millions of people say, “I’ll start in January.” But by the time January 1st arrives, it feels like starting from zero.
When you move your body now, even for 10-15 minutes you’re keeping a small flame lit. So when January comes, you’re not starting over, you’re simply turning the flame up.
Because the cold and darkness really do affect our mood.
Less sunlight impacts energy, motivation, mood, and even sleep. Movement helps regulate all of that. It boosts serotonin, supports better rest, and warms your body from the inside out.
Sometimes that 10-minute stretch, small walk, or living room workout is the exact medicine your mind and mood need.
Because the holidays come with extra calories, sugar, and celebration.
Let’s be honest between the cookies, parties, comfort meals, and holiday drinks, this season comes with extra everything. And nothing is wrong with enjoying it! But movement helps your body process it better.
More sugar + less movement = sluggish digestion, lower energy, and more inflammation. More sugar + a little movement = balance, steadiness, and a body that feels supported.
Because winter is when many people slip into “survival mode.”
When our routines fall apart in December, we end up feeling behind before the new year even starts.
But when you give yourself small daily wins this month • 60 seconds of jumping jacks• A quick walk• 5 minutes of stretching• A simple at-home routine—you start January with confidence.
This winter, I'm choosing to start now. Not because it’s easy. Not because I magically love the cold (still no).But because I know that if I move now, January will meet me with momentum not struggle...SO

I’m Starting a Winter Movement Challenge — Join Me!
Because I know how hard this season feels, I decided not to do it alone.
Starting today, I launched a Winter Movement Challenge inside my private Facebook group. We’re doing short, simple, doable movements every three days—building up slowly, gently, and consistently.
No perfection. No intimidation. Just women choosing not to let winter steal our energy or momentum.
If you need accountability, connection, or just a gentle nudge to get moving again, come join us https://www.facebook.com/groups/1500520033899135. We’re in this together, warming our bodies from the inside out and setting ourselves up strong for 2026.

Let This Be Your Nudge
You don’t need a full program today. You don’t need perfection. You just need a start.
Set your intention in December so that when the new year arrives, you’re already in motion, stronger, more grounded, and ready to step into the version of you that’s been waiting.
Your body will thank you. Your mind will thank you. Your future self will thank you.
And together, we’ll walk into the new year not starting over…but leveling up.
